Attack of the midget fun suckers.....

I think that it's fairly safe to say that Elly doesn't have much of a sense of humor. The same person who reacts to the thrill of adrenaline by shuddering in horror and angrily cursing the people who evilly dare her to step outside her oh-so-narrow comfort zone and actually live instead of being a gloomy hole in the air glumly waiting for sweet, sweet death to free her from her endless woes doesn't seem to be able to find it in her to find most of life's absurdities especially risible. I've told you about how she thinks that she has to be grimly serious at all times lest her children see her laugh and thus no longer take her seriously but I forgor about the flip-side: her need to blame other people for her innate inability to just let go of things.

Part of her wants to blame John for not respecting her boundaries but most of her seems to see her children as being a problem. Y'see, she can laugh in front of him because he's an adult but she can't laugh in front of her kids or they won't respect her. Since she doesn't want to admit that she's a very gloomy person who not only sees the glass as half full but also swimming with the filth of the horrible person who cruelly and unfairly drank it, she perforces blames the children for her need to take herself too damned seriously. This means that not only are they terrifying little parasites who demand too much of her time and seem to thus be at war with her need to express herself, they eat her happiness because they hate the idea of her smiling.
