Elly the pocket hole.

I've noticed that there's another hindrance to any effort Michael might make to save money: Elly's tendency to think that any unclaimed money is hers. Given her inability to recognize any sort of personal boundary that would inconvenience her, she seems to think that if people just leave cash lying around, they must not want it. She also seems to think that she has to engage in mild acts of embezzlement in order to feel as if she's earned money like everyone else.

The end result of his having to spend money as soon as it comes in before his mother hooks onto it is that he ends up not being able to plan for the future. He also has to absorb verbal abuse about his improvidence from the person who guarantees that money does burn holes in his pockets.
