The misery of others: a cheap source of humour.

One thing you can't help but notice is that other people's unhappiness is always good for a laugh down at the Pattermanse. Oh, how Elly laughed and laughed when she contemplated smokers being burned to death a few months back. Every time they see someone in trouble in a way that amuses them, they sit there and laugh their hate-filled, sticky-out tongue laugh. It wouldn't occur to them that other people have just as much right to respect and dignity that they do, you see. The same unenlightened narcissism that inflates their perception of their deeds to the heroic scale diminishes the accomplishments and worth of those around them. There's a reason that people stopped going to the Patterson family for help; they already know what response they'll get, so why bother. Either they'll get cruel and stupid mockery or fretful dithering instead of help. The only way you could pry money or time loose from those vermin is if you could convince them they'll make a buck off it. You may have to endure their delusion that they're in charge but since no one else cares what they think, it's a small price to pay.
