Bribery, the ultimate weapon.

Another way in which the Pattersons betray their unwillingness to see things through a child's eyes is their habit of bribing a child into compliance. We've all seen a PatterParent get a child to do what he or she wants by promising a reward for good behavior. The downside of this, of course, is that they stunt the child's moral growth. Instead of raising a child who does good things because they're good, you end up with little hucksters who only do something because there's something in it for them. The sad thing is that Mikeanna and Lizthony are gonna start bitching about their children's lack of initiative ten years hence as if they had nothing to do with anything. The ideal here is to reinforce good behavior not by a cookie but by verbal praise, something along the lines of telling them how grown-up they are. That's because the point of the exercise is to raise people who can look after themselves, not crap out overgrown children who have to have the 'rents bail them out.
