The art of not being clear.

A recent annotation to one of the daily strips reminds us of why it is that Elly seems to stumble along blindly like she did in her job search. This is because there's something of a disconnect between what Lynn wanted to say and what she ended up saying. What she wanted to say was that Elly believed that she'd lost enough weight so that she could once again feel her hipbones. What she ended up saying is that she'd confused wadded-up tissues with said hips. The notes sort of explained what she really meant but it seems to me that she should have made that more clear when she was writing the strip in the first place. The problem is that Lynn really doesn't seem to realize to most people, having hips means that one does not have the same silhouette as Olive Oyl; this leads to her not realizing that Elly would have been relieved to retrieve said offending Kleenexes as she'd originally thought them to be cellulite.

The reason that I mention this is that a mind that can't see that simple fact would probably still be confused and angered that Elly wasn't handed a job in retail merely because she shops. She's extremely lucky that she found Lilliput's when she did because she would otherwise have ended up either having to go back to night school or end up at Tim Horton's rocking a hairnet and tan uniform wondering why they call two cream, two sugar a double-double.
