Hanlon's razor, Elly's job.

We're a few days away from something really rather interesting. You see, Elly is running late coming home from work and assumes that Mike has the sense to go to Annie or Connie's house if she's not there only to find the boy standing outside and wondering where she was; what she didn't realize is that Mike isn't smart enough to do that. It seems to me that a lot of Mike's problem is that he's kind of an idiot and doesn't realize that his not liking change is a problem. There are, after all, any number of strips that show Elly trying very hard to explain things to him only to have him not understand what she's talking about because he's too dumb. We are, after all, talking about a boy who, when told to look in the fridge and make himself something to eat because Elly is busy, stands there because "Mom always drops everything and makes lunch"; the idea that he can make his own lunch would no sooner occur to him than going to someone else's place when Elly isn't there would because he's too stupid to realize that things can change.

There's another huge difference between Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes; Watterson never really went in for licensing the crap out of his characters…
