The lost opportunities involved in taking Susan out......

As you may or may not remember, I once wrote a blog entry that speculated that Lynn actually does believe that the women John leer at like it and want it. The antsy bundle of self-loathing and knee-jerk hostility to anyone she thinks has it better than she does can't seem to wrap her head around the idea that attractive women don't appreciate being treated like objects by scum any more than she can think that they aren't trying to steal her boyfriend so they can laugh at her for even wanting to be happy. The reason that I mention this is that recently, Lynn made an after-the-fact declaration that she should have set up a long-term story arc in which John got waaaaaaaaaaaay too close to a willing Susan so that we could have a messy, unnecessary confrontation straight out of a soap opera. Had she actually done so (or contemplated doing so) just so that she could work out her issues with her first husband, it would have been the stupidest mistake she ever made. It would become readily apparent that she'd made a misstep when people started writing in letters sympathizing with her for the affair Rod was having. Trying to explain that as far as she knew, Rod was faithful would do as much good as trying to smoothe over his getting hate mail. Also, no one was going to read a strip in which the main character stood there like a wooden Jesus in a country graveyard denying the fact that she was being cheated on. The only reason they tolerated Anne being Queen of Denial was her rank as a secondary character; letting Elly be the fool would wreck Lynn's career.
