The "Sure, why not?" cosmogony of the Pattersons.....

As we all know, one of the Sunday strips had Elly explain how and why leaves turn color only to be informed that Grandma 'splained dat God painted each an'ev'ry one. The odd thing about the strip is that the throw-away panels had Elly come up with a breezy non-answer of her own.

The reason that I find that strip telling is that it reminds us all that the Pattersons' idea of the divine seems to be derived from watching cartoons. Not only do we have the Almighty Painter Of The Leaves, John would later go on to explain that angelic bureaucrats counted all the leaves in the world while Meredith would eventually wonder when the Easter Bunny was going to save Jesus from the Romans.

What appears to be going on here is that Christianity is being used to serve the long-term Pattersonian agenda of never giving children a straight answer about anything lest they use that knowledge to overthrow their parents and usher in an era of chaos wherein two helpless victims are forced to do things for others without getting anything in return.
