On the topic of booze and Patterchildren.

You know, there's something missing from the current arc. Usually when you have a kid playing around in the liquor cabinet like an idiot on the sitcoms that Lynn stole from, the episode ends with Ward or whoever telling the Beav that alcohol is not a toy to play with. Just as Mike doesn't get a lecture about playing with matches like he ought to, his getting into the booze is seen as something of a minor misadventure by irresponsible idiot parents. Sure, he, Liz and April all get what they call the Breathalyzer kiss but that's more inspired by respectability than any silliness about teaching children about the dangers of becoming an alcoholic. This is because Lynn seems to see getting drunk as something of a free action despite knowing intellectually about the horrible consequences of the habit. This is why Liz and Mike's getting hammered at Uni is seen more as a rite of passage than a potential problem.
