The mistake constantly made.

The oddest thing of all about Mike not getting the lecture he needs for deliberately doing something stupid and destructive is that Elly seems to save that for when he, Liz or April don't mean to do something bad. It says a lot about Elly that when children feel bad enough already, she thinks that they don't come close to feeling bad enough about the inconvenience that they didn't intend to inflict on her. It says more that when they do do stupid things to get her goat, she's all about leniency and understanding and all the other things that ensure that she's going to absorb a lot of crap for years to come.

I ascribe it to her needing something on them to get them to do what she wants when she wants them to. She can't own horses if they don't set out to screw with her, after all.
