The wages of arrogance: idiot children leading empty lives.

Given that Elly thought she had all the answers as a parent, her realization that her adult children's lives are empty and meaningless will of course come as a shock. We know that's because, consciously or not, Elly encouraged them to live parts of the life she denied herself so she can have her cake and eat it too. Mike, you see, is not a natural as an author. His real, undiscovered skills seem to lie elsewhere but they were never really encouraged. If he didn't churn out the Great Canadian Novel, Elly wouldn't get to live vicariously through him. The same goes for Miss Adventure, Liz. Her life is a mess because she, a born homebody, got from Mommy the notion that she should seek herself far from the comforts of home. Once she realizes that trying to live through them made their lives a study in quiet desperation, she'll try to make sense of things. Given that any divorce would be unlikely to be civilized, John would end up being the fall guy. Odds are, he'd end up hearing endless variations on this theme: "Why didn't you stop me?"
