Elly Patterson: Language Cop.

As you've no doubt guessed by now, I think that Elly isn't especially bright and tends to see every little thing as part of a conspiracy to ruin her life and humiliate her and make her look like a fool that can never be taken seriously and so on and so forth. I also tend to think that she has the paranoid dread that people who really don't have a stake in the matter and don't as such have any sort of opinion about how she and her family live their lives are all meeting up somewhere to talk about how that shiftless Patterson woman lets her children run hog-wild.

I've spoken in the past about how the neighbors shrug and wonder why she gets herself pointlessly upset because she thinks that her tame children look like anarchistic monsters because they dress mildly slobby or why she goes berserk when they disagree with her to any extent. What I'd like to talk about today is her irritating tendency to focus on their nebulous grasp of English for the wrong reason. What usually happens is that Mike stupidly uses profanity where she can actually hear it and this sends her into a flurry of ranting about how children all use garbage words like they don't care about how their poor mother looks or anything. What generally ends up escaping her is that they aren't actually doing this (or anything) with the express intention of hurting her or making her look bad or anything. What they see is a mean, crazy woman who gets up every morning figuring out what excuse she's going to use to inflict arbitrary punishments for things that do not affect her. What they've noticed is that she loves to talk about how what they do somehow magically makes her look bad in front of adults who they know to whisper "Who is SHE trying to impress?" when they talk about her.
