On not realizing that you're teaching children.

Now, I've gone on at length about how Elly doesn't seem to realize that she's teaching her children bad eating habits or that if they wait long enough, someone will pick their stuff up for them despite that someone having the habit of jabbing her finger in the air like a lunatic and baying at the moon about how she was meant to do more than chase after children and clean up after them. What I tend to gloss over is the fact that Elly simply refuses to understand that children can't accept "because" as an answer. Most people in the world realize that children are infinitely curious and, given their innate drive to find out how the world works and their belief that everything in the world must serve a purpose, tend to ask why an awful lot. Since Elly is the creation of a woman who sees the presence of children in her vicinity as an evil intrusion meant to keep her from doing important things that will give her an identity that isn't mother or housewife, the question "why" is seen as an evil imposition meant to confuse her. The general response is to ascribe everything to a God she cannot quite believe in.

That, of course, isn't the only thing she doesn't realize that she's teaching. Given that she and John love to browbeat them into submission by use of false dilemmas (eat this horrible food or you don't love me, wear this ugly coat or you can't go to kindergarten because you hate me, accept the ludicrous and self-serving idea that you owe us everything we spend on you or you're a selfish monster we can't love and so on into the infinite) and that they're totally all over the map when it comes to reacting to what Mike, Liz and April do, they've taught the children that cause and effect cannot ever be connected. Since the children can't possibly anticipate what the Hell their parents are going to do in any given situation, the best course of action is to do nothing.
