Asian and nerdy: the stereotype and its discontents.

As you know, I really didn't much enjoy Lynn's lovely travelogue about her trip to Thailand. Not only were we treated to her stupid misinterpretation of certain long-term social ills (pretty boys, indeed!!), we had to contend with her super-paternalistic outrage that the real, authentic Thailand had disappeared and been replaced with a Western-looking city. She'll deny it but it's obvious that she thinks that the people of Thailand should have been forbidden from living how they want so she can parade around the set of a movie long banned for committing lèse-majesté.

The reason that I mentioned her belief that Asian people should live and be how she was raised to see them is comes into play when we remember that there have been any number of strips that have Brian being depicted as being weird because he actually likes school and gets good grades. As we saw, Lynn likes to defend herself by stating that no one with an Asian-sounding name ever complained. The problem that isn't her belief that racism against Asians matters less is that someone nice and ill-informed like her doesn't actually know what an Asian name actually sounds like. For example, Filipinos have mostly Spanish surnames, Thais and Cambodians have more syllables than she associates with typical Asian names and Asian women marrying white guys tend to take hubby's surname so she can't spot them. Worse, the people who might complain also tend to not rock the boat so she could have offended a lot of people and never realize it because she was never told off.
