The foot through the ceiling and its discontents.

The very interesting thing about this year's Christmas arc is that Jim and Marian fly over to spend their holiday at the Pattermanse. Aside from the usual annoying thing Marian does of smugly sabotaging Elly for her own good, we have to contend with the fact that Jim is retired and thus underfoot and causing a problem for everyone because he doesn't want to be idle despite that being easier on busy women with no help and no time to themselves.

This sort of establishes a trend that comes into play about when the Later Years start to blend into the Declining Years: the unswerving belief that retired men and their need to do something that isn't "just sit down and relax and quit telling me that I'm doing housework in the most ridiculously self-defeating way possible" is no more and no less than yet another aggravating hardship inflicted on the women of the world. This is why Elly sort of digs the fact that John disappears into his workshop instead of being the sort of annoying pest Steve and Greg are; he might not help out but at least he's not making things worse.
