On not paying attention in health class.

As we saw yesterday, Elly honestly seemed to have believed that for her to lose the weight she needed to be really attractive, she needed to balance her calorie intake with the energy expended doing housework. While most people would tell her that her logic is at best unsound and at worst a recipe for exercise bulimia, she'd probably go right on ignoring them because what little she remembers from health class got tangled up with whatever bullshit Marian was feeding her about getting slim. Given that most of what was taught in the fifties and sixties is obsolete and that "Accordion playing adds inches to the bust line" is freaking stupid, most of the things Elly believes about health are somewhat questionable.

That being said, it's not as if we're going to hear her admit that she can't housework her way to being slim and loved and happy any more that we'd be able to get her to admit that she's in a permanent duck that makes her look heavier than she is. Not only do we have to contend with her fear of admitting that what she's doing is futile, wrong and ineffective and her other fear of being revealed to having misread the situation and thus having her classmates from first grade swarm down to laugh at her in front of John and the kids forever, we have to deal with her dread of the fact that when they told her to get with the program, they had every right to change the channel. Nothing makes her more scared than admitting that what she knows is out of date because to her, it means that she too is to be thrown on the junk heap.
