No Learning, No Growth......

One of the most annoying things is that the Pattersons seem to almost deliberately refuse to learn from their mistakes. Elly, for instance, has spent her entire career as a mother trying to shout her way to success and failed. Somewhere in the depths of her heart and soul, she believes with child-like faith that if she does it long enough, her bellowing will bring about the harmonious family she wants. This is because she believes something stupid: that the world is deliberately defying her will and has to be made to admit the error of its ways. Her imbecile, stubborn vanity can't allow her to admit that the universe wasn't designed to make her happy. That would mean she'd have to do something she hates to do: admit that she was in the wrong. The closest she'll allow herself to a chance at real growth is a weaselly simulation of an actual concession. Her children may not scream like her, may run from conflict but they, too, think that admitting mistakes is a bad thing, that they have to be the winner in the argument.
