We'll see this in two years time when there's a huge to-do about a blizzard that no one really seems to have prepared for. We start with Elly getting all angry because John suggests that since her job isn't quite as vital as his is that she stay home (only for him to get stranded because they both should have stayed in), segue to the kids being in danger of being stuck overnight at school because this was before they wised up and preemptively cancelled classes and finish with Elly's getting wrecked by a plow after she'd had to abandon it.
The reason that I mention this is that we're clearly dealing with a time before the Weather Channel when we look at arcs like this. Were the strip really set in the present day, we wouldn't have arguments about whose job is more important because we'd probably be dealing with Elly assuming that the snowstorm would possibly be worse than it turned out to be. Given that school didn't even get cancelled and that the lights came on only after a few hours, it seems to me that they got off easy but given who she is, she'd probably be hunkered down waiting for the weather bomb to kill everyone.
