On hitting the books.

As we know, Michael tends to make a great big production of how stoopid math is and how HARD it is and how much he HATES it and how cruel and terrible and anti-happiness his teachers are for insisting that he learn something like that like he's just another nobody who has to waste his life doing boring stuff. We also know that he seems to go out of his way not to understand the whole core concept behind school in the first place. The reason that I'm reminding you of this is that it seems to me that this screaming about how terrible his life is because he has to endure being asked what he doesn't know is possibly why he has a mental block in the first place.

It seems to me that the strip in which Elly calls him on this tendency to make a great big production of something that he could easily do if he didn't have such a bad attitude and helpfully showing him that she does the same thing when it comes time to iron clothes explains why it is that he recoils from having to contend with figures. Simply put, he doesn't want to have to face the awful possibility that he's nothing more than a malingering idiot who made a big deal out of something that wasn't. If he's just some unpalatable jerk who threw his hands up in the air when moral fibre and a work-to-win spirit could have gotten results instead of the sympathetic victim of a plot to steal his happiness, all he's succeeding in down by yelling about how teachers can shove their evil numbers somewhere unpleasant is make himself look like a lazy, ill-tempered and spineless muttonhead and that would be terrible.
