Selective collective amnesia and Phil's wedding.

As we're about to see, Phil is anxious about the wedding process. While Elly writes him off as being a silly child-man who needs to do the right thing and grow up and no, she's not a vindictive shrew who's five seconds away from overloading the pleasure centre of her brain contemplating him being as lost, angry, confused and miserable as she is because she's perfectly content in life and things are fine and she's gotten over her childhood, yessir, no problem there, Phil is terrified that he's going to be a bad husband and ruin everyone's lives and can't he defer his inevitable disgrace and failure until it's too late to matter? Most of us see someone eager to have something to do with her time not really paying too much attention to her kid brother until he does things that get in the way of the happy event.

The reason that I mention this is that we are dealing with the same Elly Patterson who can look back at a lifetime of being the screaming, bullying, braying, lecturing, inattentive, fractious, short-tempered, slow-to-listen, slower-to-forgive, easily-angered and oblivious clod-hopper we know and loathe and see herself as being practically perfect in every way. She was a super-mom with ideal children who never raised her voice and everyone made her life easy. This means that she was alert to Phil's concerns after all and did her best to assure him all would be well. Since everyone knows better than to contradict the maniac, they all join in pretending that Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.
