Platitudes and Earnestness: Proud Patterson Traditions....

One of the most annoying things about the characters in the strip is that they are unreasonably earnest all the time. Every minor decision is discussed as if the fate of all mankind depended on it. The fading of a high school infatuation, for instance, is treated as if it were some Unbearable Tragedy, some Great Historic Wrong that has to be made right for the good of the world. Since Liz and Anthony couldn't lighten the hell up, they caused inconceivable havoc in the lives of other people so they could recapture non-existent magic. Not only that, Gerald and April are headed for the same nasty future. Why? Because, like everyone else, they talked themselves into thinking that they like the other person. That's why the Pattersons greet one another in such a ridiculously stilted manner. They don't much like the people around them but think that if they keep on spouting treacly mush, they can make themselves be a family. Always and ever, we get stilted dialogue failing to hide the real lack of concern they feel to those around them.
