Image versus Reality, Part two: Elizabeth.

As howtheduck reminded me, Lynn's questionable storytelling turned Anthony from the well-meaning, clunky-but-sweet natured male lead she'd intended him to be into the whining toad we all loathe. If she hadn't had him moan "I have no home", we could buy into him as the hapless victim of a materialistic schemer. What made things worse was her attempt to dig herself out of her hole. Not only did she start things off by justifying Thérèse's insane jealousy, every single attempt she made to explain how Anthony's marriage collapsed put more and more of the weight squarely on his sloped shoulders. Too bad she's doing the same thing to Elizabeth. Last year at this time, we were talking about the collapse of her romance with Paul Wright. It seems to me that Lynn's intention was to have a well-meaning, trusting young woman think that she had something lasting when the object of her affections only wanted sex. Her execution of said plotline was unbelievably wrongheaded because she wound up making Elizabeth look like she was jerking the guy around so she could go Down South and sniff after her old boyfriend. Her timing was off because Anthony's marriage should have collapsed at the same time her relationship did. There were many other reasons to head down home besides what happened with Anthony but Lynn just didn't think of them. If she'd just had Liz say that she missed home without mentioning Anthony, she wouldn't look as bad.
