Reflections on a thirteenth month

As I sit here and reflect on the year gone by, I do so in the knowledge that a lot of people probably don't share my feelings about when a year begins or ends. You see, for the longest time, it's felt as if the year starts on the second day of January because the winter holidays are at an end and we switch from Christmas to plain old frozen, snowy and depression old Winter and ends on the twenty-third day of December. The nine-day period from Christmas Eve to New Years' Day has always felt like something of, well, a thirteenth month to the year because, well, we're busy wrapping up the Year That Was and getting ready for The Year That Shall Be.

This is probably owing to the fact that I watch a lot of television and the news stories are always about "The Year In Review" and "The Biggest Stories Of The Past Year" and "A Look Ahead At Next Year" and, well, the Christmas specials that dominate the screen before the 24th give way to baffling nonsense about Rudolph time traveling and Charlie Brown being forced to write a book report about War And Peace over Christmas Break and the like. Also, the college bowl football games prevent the return of normal programming and winter replacements and so on and so forth.

The reason that I mentioned that is that it occurs to me that the Pattersons would probably arrange the calendar to suit themselves if they had their druthers. I'll explain why and how after I explain calendars themselves tomorrow.
